Part 7

She stood in front of him and removed her dress. All he saw was the nude silhouette of hips and breasts held by crossed arms like a marble statue. A light flashed from outside the window, revealing a tapestry of scars across her body, clusters and highways of pain swerving across her skin. Adrian cried and, once again, he didn’t want her to be alone. He removed his clothes. From the left shoulder, an inch-thick and inch-deep purple riverbed crawled down to his hip bone.

She cried as she ran her fingers over the scar.

“You poor boy,” she cried.

“You poor girl,” he put his hand on her arm. They caressed one another in the night. Their bodies came closer, hands caressing the scars and skin. Their lips touched. Gently at first, with an exhale of excitement. “Oh, Adrian,” she whispered. She could feel his heat. He pressed his scars against hers.

“I love you, Tamara.”

“I love you, Adrian,” she said and her head fell back as his lips moved down her neck, her shoulders, and then down her breasts.

“I want you. I need to look after you,” he whispered, and she cried.

“Please do. I will do the same. You touch me,” she whispered.

They fell on the bed, sinking them deeper into the shadows of the room; lips and bodies entwined. Adrian’s hands explored her body. Tamara’s frantic hands shed the barriers between them until there was nothing but body. He pinned her gently beneath his heavy warmth. In the faint light filtering through the window, his gaze swept over her face, exploring the lines of her face, the tears still drying on her cheeks. His eyes were dark with a fierce, protective hunger. Tamara fingers tangled in his hair and pulled him back down to her. The probing and demanding kiss, a silent sealing them together. Tamara pulled him closer, arching her back as his weight settled between her thighs. The room seemed to shrink until there was nothing but the sound of their breath and the rhythm of their bodies moving together.

The room had grown cold, but the heat between them remained. The deep, quiet stillness replaced the frantic urgency. Only their chests rising and falling as one in a slow, steady rhythm. Tamara rested her head on his shoulder, one leg hooked over his, her fingers idly tracing the rough, uneven terrain of his jagged scar.

Adrian shifted, turning his head to look at her in the dim light. He reached down, capturing her hand. “Looking at you, I see… I see us,” he said softly. He pulled her hand up and pressed a kiss to the palm. “I was thinking about how people try so hard to hide the broken parts of themselves. They lie, and they wear those lies like an armour.”

“We do,” she said.

“I promise to never lie again,” Adrian said. He reached up, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering on her jawline. “I look at my scars, and for years, they just felt like proof of a bad explosion. Proof of something that tried to ruin me. But tonight, touching your pain… it feels like a map that brought us to the same place.”

Tamara’s smile faded into vulnerability. She looked down at where their scarred bodies joined at the textured marks of their survival.

“It’s a strange kind of armour, isn’t it?” she murmured, running her palm flat against his chest, right over his heart. “We’re covered in it.”

He took her hand again, threading his fingers through hers, pressing their joined palms down against the mattress. “Let’s carry these together. I don’t want a perfect, untouched life, Tamara. I want this one. With you.”

Tamara leaned down, her lips brushing against his, tasting the salt and the warmth of him.

“I promise,” she said against his mouth, her voice steady and certain. “We keep the scars. We keep each other. Every single heart-breaking, beautiful piece.”

In the quiet dark, surrounded by the wreckage of their pasts, they found a sanctuary that belonged entirely to them.
